One of the things I have found over the last few years traveling is the value of doing research on the area where you are going to go. Not just a little bit of research, but in depth research. I have been working on perfecting this. Once I know where I will be, I begin to decide what time I will have to devote to taking photos. This leads to where I want to take photos and then finally I go as far as planning the times and researching lighting angles. I know this sounds like a lot, but in the end, I think it is well worth it.

So, after all that, I had it easy in the District. Instead of doing all the research, I had a guide. I told them that I just wanted to drift around some of the museum buildings and take a few photos. Well, okay, several hundred. One of their most recommended places was the flower gardens behind The Castle.
It was pretty cool walking around the Enid A. Haupt garden during a slight rain. It made all the surfaces glow. One of the coolest areas I found was the area to the west where a small pond (Flower Petals for the Lady / The Hidden Pond) was. This was the entrance to that area. Even though I was in the heart of the District, there was no one around while I was taking these photos in the early evening.
It’s the out-of-the-way places that make some of the nicest shots; few people and places most haven’t seen. The rain brings out the colors very nicely.
