From the monthly archives: "June 2011"

I have never been a portrait person, but I have decided to try my hand at it.  I think right now, my impromptu photo sessions are how it will have to be.  I don’t know though, I have had several people ask for time.  For those of you who asked…soon.  However, I was able to capture several shots with my little “A” team.  I would just say “A”, but she is mean/resourceful/tricky/crazy enough for the whole team.  I was amazed that she actually stood still long enough for this, but some of the expressions were well worth it.

As July 4th approaches, I ran across this in my archive.  I have gone through several different processing techniques over the last few years.  Selective colorization was one of them and this was my very first attempt.  The more I process photos, the more there techniques become blended together for me.  This was July 4th several years ago.  I was going to hold this one for July 4th, but I like it so much, It could not wait.

I was fortunate to have some time around sunset one evening while in Portland.  I walked all the way around the Esplanade.  The what you ask?  Yeah, Esplanade.  I had to look it up also.  There are so many excellent angles to capture in this city.  I really like the bridges.  In the southeast, bridges over the water are either tall enough to allow ships through, or are draw bridges that split in the middle and raise on either side.  In Portland, they have a section in the middle that lifts straight up.  I wish I had been able to capture one while it was up, but I was never in the right place at the right time.

This is a photo I have had in my archive.  I decided to pull some out the other day and work on some of the old stuff.  I caught this on a clam morning just as the sun was coming up.  It is nice to not have to go very far to take photos.  Unfortunately, sometimes I think it makes me lazier that I should be.

I was able to find a few minutes to process some recent photos since yesterdays post.  I said I would begin a series on “finding the small things”.  This is my first experiment in actually looking for the small shot.  I have taken a few in the past, mostly flowers, which turned out good, but at the time, I was not specifically looking for a close-up shot.

I was taking sunset photos the other night when I began looking at the gate on the other side of the road.  Now, I have a fascination with gates for some reason, but I noticed a blue color on this one that really stood out.  I approached it and noticed the lock on the gate was a Master lock.  (Enter time for “finding the small things”) Ignoring the beautiful sunset…photos yet to come…I set the tripod up.  Let me know what you think.

I have been posting photos on several Flickr groups and have gotten some good feed back.  If you have not checked out my flickr stream, it’s on the right.  I was reading some posts over at Tim Stanley Photography and it made me think.  I love landscape photography, but conditions are not always what I want, which makes it difficult to focus on photography sometimes.  However, Tim was talking about focusing on the smaller things instead of the mountain views.  I did not think much about that until later when I was taking sunset photos.  I began to think of some of the small things around, which may be good photos.  I will post some experiments in “finding the small things” soon.  Lesson learned: look at the small things as well as the big picture.

This is the southwestern view from the top of Springer Mountain.  I loves how the fog was still hanging in the valleys below waiting for the sunrise.

I started this website as a forum to post my photography and thought.  I made a decision at the start to post one photo a day.  With the exception of lack of internet, I have met that commitment and plan to continue.  I say this because I believe that, just in the few months since beginning, I have increased my knowledge exponentially.  The process of having to get a photo ready each night is trying, but the rewards are well worth it.  Not only have I learned from earlier mistakes, but also from input.

I now believe that one of the best rules of photography is to take pictures.  No, I mean it.  If you don’t practice, you will never get better, or at least not nearly as fast.

I ran across this completely by accident.  I was trying to get to the popcorn store…no, not for me…my wife.  Well and kids.  But anyway, next door is the Cigar Bar.  Lined up outside were three motorcycles.  One of which was Tennessee Orange.  Yes, Orange with a capital “O”.  I parked the car several spots away, well, the other side of the parking lot, got out and slowly approached.  A Cigar Bar, you never know what is going to come out and get on those bikes.  I took a couple photos, was not accosted and believing I had permission then, took a few more.  Anyone in the north Atlanta area that wants photos of their bike, let me know.  I really enjoyed taking this and the way it turned out.

Another quick shot from Easter.  There is nothing like seeing the joy on a child’s face as they run, look for and then find eggs; or for that matter, anything.  I would not be able to do this without my family to support this “eccentric” habit.  Sometimes they think I am crazy for the lengths I go to get a shot.  Other times, I think I am.

I was exploring downtown Cartersville when I came across this church.  In the top of the church was an orange type light.  There were no other lights on but that one.  Not even the decorative lights lining the front were on.  Makes you wonder…

I took the day off from photography.  Well not completely, I took some photos.  However, I decided to spend my time on the river today.  Unfortunately, cameras and water are not the best of friends.  So tonights post shall be short.

I just love the first rays of sun.  Sitting in the dark and then..light.  Especially when I get to see it from some place as beautiful as the top of a mountain.  What is you favorite time of the day?
