After the Storm

Today’s Photo:  After the Storm

This is one of those rare shots where I take it and process it in the same day.  Today, it rained all day and then started clearing up right before sunset.  I began noticing that there appeared to be a break happening in the clouds near the ground and decided that I need to take some photos.  By the time I made it to where I wanted to get some shots, the sun had gone a little lower than I wanted, but I got the last of the color.  The last week has had some good sunsets.  Hopefully that is a sign that we are going to be in for some good ones to come.

Behind this Wall

Today’s Photo:  Behind this Wall

History is my favorite subject.  If I thought I could have made a living at being an archeologist, I would have.  I enjoy the study of how the world is continually changing and hoping from one conflict to another as though conflict, or conflict resolution is what makes the world turn.  During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key was caught up in the fighting between America and Britain.  While sitting on a British ship, Key watched as the English bombarded Fort McHenry.  A sight that would leave quite an impression on future generations.  It was not for a hundred years that these words became the theme song for a nation.  Now behind this golden wall lies the flag that has inspired an nation through the words of Key.

Midday Gate

Today’s Photo:  Midday Gate

It is extremely rare that I drive past this gate during the midday.  I just happened to be going to a Christmas party with the kids when I saw these perfect clouds.  I stopped for a few shots and we were not even late to the party.  I’m starting to get good at building in some time for unexpected pleasures like this.  Now why can’t the clouds look like this at sunrise or sunset?

Where did all the Sunsets go

Today’s Photo:  Where did all the Sunsets go

Sunsets have been pretty dull around here the past few months.  Either there have been no clouds, or too many clouds.  It was fairly good today.  The storms ended and were clearing up on my way home.  To bad this was not today.  Those photos will wait for another day when I have some time to process them.

Rows Among the Trees

Today’s Photo:  Rows Among the Trees

Visiting a normal cemetery is not the same as visiting a military cemetery.  Yes, there is still lots of history and many stories behind the people under each headstone.  However, there are not many cemeteries that can match the orderliness.  There are row upon row of …Continue Reading Here…

Back to Bethlehem

Today’s Photo:  Back to Bethlehem

Last weekend, I took the family through a live rendition of the town of Bethlehem.  When I was little, I remember our church hosting something similar.  However, it was a guided tour that followed the Christmas story.  Back to Bethlehem was the town of Bethlehem set up so you could explore the market and interact with the residents.  This shot was from the entrance with the Roman guards watching over the guests.

Daytime at the Observatory

Today’s Photo:  Daytime at the Observatory

It is not often that I get a chance to stop by the observatory at the Tellus museum.  It is even rarer that I get to stop by and see it open during the day.  I wanted to get inside and get a look through the telescope, but they were looking at sun spots and the sun had just gone below the horizon.  However, the final rays of light shining in the open door looked pretty neat.

Entrance to the Farm

Today’s Photo:  Entrance to the Farm

I don’t really know that this is a farm.  However, making an educated guess is pretty easy.  There is a lot of land inside this fence and I could see a herd of cattle in the distance.  I took this just before watching a pretty good colorful sunset.  I also stayed around a little longer and got some of those dusk colors after the sun went down.

The Jar

Today’s Photo:  The Jar

Because of the way cameras work, you can achieve some phenomenal results that many people would not ever think of.  A while back, I was researching doing some portraits using just one flash and how adjusting the exposure can create some interesting effects.  One of those was to make a person’s head seem to float with a black background.  What was interesting was that the photo was taken just a couple feet in front of a white wall.  I found this jar sitting in an old house during the middle of the day when it was bright outside.  As part of my camera kit, I keep a small flashlight.  I metered this shot and then used the exposure compensation to stop it down by 5 full exposure values.  Then, I took my little LED flashlight and shined it on the jar.  The wall is only about 10 inches behind the jar and fairly well lit.  In fact, click on the photo and look at the jar big.  You can see the reflection of the windows and door behind me.  A fast shutter speed and narrow aperture can create some interesting looks.

Cartersville and Plant Bowen

Today’s Photo:  Cartersville and Plant Bowen

I was hoping to get at least some photos from my sunrise trip to the top of Pine Mountain, but that did not happen.  I did get some predawn, overcast shots of Cartersville and Plant Bowen.  Click on the photo and view it large.  Above the lights in the bottom right, you can see the Bartow County Courthouse in the distance, you can see the smoke stacks from Georgia Power’s Plant Bowen.  From where I took this photo, it is about 3 miles to the courthouse and near 11 miles from Plant Bowen.
