A Storm at the Gate

Today’s Photo:  A Storm at the Gate

I have been spending so much time processing photos of Christmas Lights, that I have neglected to get some shots of gates up.  I haven’t had much time to go exploring for some new gates, not to mention the weather here has either been way to bad or nonexistent.  This shot I took a while back.  I was trying for a little closer perspective.

The Dragonfly

Today’s Photo:  The Dragonfly

I try my best not to post too many photos from the same event too close together, but I find I am having trouble doing that with my photos from the Garden Lights exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens.  This shot was from the Brilliant Bugs (Edible Garden) portion of the gardens.  We did not want to wait in line to go through the conservatory, so we entered the Brilliant bugs exhibit from what appeared to be intended as the exit.  One of the first “Bugs” we ran across was this Dragonfly.  I stopped to take a few shots, but was not very happy with them.  However, on the way back through here, I got this on with the swirling water underneath.

Floating In

When you go to an air show, you get to see airplanes landing and taking off.  So, it stands to reason that when you go to a helicopter airshow, you get to see helicopters taking off and landing.  I spent several minutes shooting the helicopters at the American Hero’s Airshow in Canton.  They had a couple set up giving flights.  The park that they had the airshow at is not very big and is right against some heavy duty overhead power lines.  I had the shutter speed set at 1/4000 of a second to get this.  I almost got the blade stopped.

Calhoun Christmas Tree

Today’s Photo:  Calhoun Christmas Tree

Downtown Calhoun Georgia is not a very big place.  In fact, if you blink, you may miss it.  I have driven through several times, and each time, I notice something I did not the time before.  This shot was of the Christmas Tree in the small park on the north side of town.  The park was not very large, maybe an acre and a half, but packed full of good compositions with the Christmas lights.  It had been raining most of the day and there were several puddles around.  Fortunately, this one was in just the right spot.

Making Tracks

Today’s Photo:  Making Tracks

Many kids grow up with a fascination with big machines and trains would definitely fall into that category.  I must admit to being guilty of this fascination growing up as well.  At one time, I had a train set that I had assembled and operated on a sheet of plywood.  I had dreams of making it much larger, but eventually let those go.  Traffic was clear when I took this and no trains were in sight.  At least not on my side of the bend.

GIMP Tilt Shift Plug-in

I have admired tilt shift photography for a long time.  I have tried numerous tutorials, plug-ins and workarounds.  Since I decided that a dedicated lens is more than I want to invest in, I have been trying the next best thing which is to make do with free.  I think I finally found what I have been looking for… Toy, a GIMP plug-in.  I am still testing it, but, so far, I am pleased with the results and ease of use.

A Little Paddle Boat

The Delta Queen is a floating hotel on the north shore of the Tennessee river in Chattanooga.  I took this shot on July 3 while waiting for Pops on the River to start.  You can see the tents and speakers set up in the grass next to the boat.  I got several more shots of the Delta Queen, but held onto this one with the intention of trying out a tilt shift style processing.  Looking back on it, I think I should have tried taking this again a little later with all the people in the park.

I seem to be the king of random stuff.  I think this has to do with the way I see the world.  Like it is through the lens.  I found this one on a back-road near Rockmart Georgia.  It has a twin that I will post sometime in the future.  Too bad gas costs as much as it does.  When I was growing up, I would drive for hours just to see what was around the next corner.

Walking around the Indiana state capitol, I ran across this walkway that was along the side of one of the buildings.  I expected to look at the other end and see people walking along a ramp going at a physically impossible angle.    When I made it to the other end, it was not so.

Today’s Photo:  Gordon County Court House

Most county court houses have been around for a while.  Some are architecturally more pleasing than others.  In 1961, Gordon county built its current court house.  I took this shot while taking Christmas light photos in downtown one night.

I was walking the trail to the base of Fall Creek Falls when I ran across this prominence.  I was drawn to it because there were a couple teenagers sitting right at the edge where the tree sticks out.  It reminded me of all the time I spent rock climbing when I was younger.  If I had taken any of my climbing gear, I would have been hard pressed to stay away from this.  As it was, I had to settle with a few photos.
