Occasionally driving around, I find something that I have need to stop and take a photo of because it is compelling to me. That was how I ran across these teal painted doors the other day. I actually was attracted to the building because the huge painted billboard on the side and then saw these near the back of the building. I could not pass up the contrasting colors and I really like the old weathered look.
Established as a guiding light for the budding colony of Georgia in 1732, the lighthouse on Tybee Island is one of the oldest in the United States. It now stands 154 feet tall at the mouth of the Savannah River and still lights the way for mariners.
I took this shot after taking the 178 stairs to the top and back down. Fortunately, we made it before they shut the lighthouse down that day due to an approaching storm.
I took off one evening after walking around River Street and made my way through several of the parks just beyond Bay Street. I went through Johnson Square and found this angle to shoot City Hall. Traffic was not real heavy, but timed just right that it took forever to get this shot without cars on Bull Street.
It has been a while since I visited a Civil War park and this is a continue of my Silent Guns of the South series.
Built in the early 1800’s and finished in 1847, this fortification has a long history. It was named after Count Casmir Pulaski and, at one point, commanded by Robert E. Lee before the beginning of the Civil War. During his command, Lee commented that the fort was impenetrable. However, that was to be proven wrong years later during an assault by Union soldiers using rifled cannons. After a 30 hour assault, Confederate commander, Col. Olmstead, surrendered the fort.
This shot is from the rear of the fort and the demilune. During the Civil War, this was flat with a surrounding parapet and held different support buildings. Between the demilune and the fort, is another portion of the moat.
Architecture has a great chance to be beautiful any time of the day. I happen to think dusk is one of the best times to photograph architecture. The lighting has a tendency to accent textures of the buildings and lights are usually on. That was how I found Cedarcrest Church just before dusk fully set in. I snapped a few around the church and ended with this shot.
After church Easter Sunday, I went to West Ridge Church in Dallas Georgia to get a few family photos. In the atrium is this large cross and it had been decorated with hanging lights. Made for a good photo opportunity. By closing the aperture as tight as I could get it, I was able to make the lights turn into little stars.
The perfect spot to take a rest after hiking to the top of Amicalola Falls is the Lodge. We stopped here and had a cup of coffee in the lounge, cooled down and then set out once again… this time to the bottom. I managed to snap a few shots inside the Lodge before we left.
I found this little building on a recent trip from Calhoun Georgia to Rome Georgia. I guess I had just put blinders on for all the years that I drove this road, but this is the first time that I had noticed this building. I did not have time to stop in the morning and made these shots in the afternoon. I am sure this shop has seen better days, on the other hand, I liked the way the vines were taking over the old tractor. It makes you wonder if the tractor was put there for show, or just never got fixed when the garage shut down.
When I am out taking photos, I have a tendency to forget to eat. It’s not that I’m not hungry, it’s that there are too many other important things going on and I don’t have time. One evening walking around the Market Square and Downtown in Knoxville, we decided to make a quick stop at this little hole in the wall sandwich shop. I am bad about trying to find these types of shops. Sometimes they are good and sometimes they are bad. This one happened to be great. I recommend it to anyone in the Knoxville area.
I drive through Waleska, Georgia on a regular basis. One of the things I get to see is Reinhardt University and Falany Hall. The performing arts hall for the university. I had never been inside it and got the chance not too long ago. I took this shot from the balcony before the recital started.
