Fort Pulaski

Today’s Photo: Fort Pulaski

It has been a while since I visited a Civil War park and this is a continue of my Silent Guns of the South series.

Built in the early 1800’s and finished in 1847, this fortification has a long history.  It was named after Count Casmir Pulaski and, at one point, commanded by Robert E. Lee before the beginning of the Civil War.  During his command, Lee commented that the fort was impenetrable.  However, that was to be proven wrong years later during an assault by Union soldiers using rifled cannons.  After a 30 hour assault, Confederate commander, Col. Olmstead, surrendered the fort.

This shot is from the rear of the fort and the demilune.  During the Civil War, this was flat with a surrounding parapet and held different support buildings.  Between the demilune and the fort, is another portion of the moat.

Stars over Amicalola

Today’s Photo: Stars over Amicalola

I took the family camping for a night at Amicalola Falls State Park a couple weekends ago.  They slept in tents while I tried out the new hammock that I’m using for my hike through the Great Smoky Mountains.  Well, I decided to spend a little time shooting the stars over the campsite while I waited for a meteor shower.  The hammock was too comfortable and I did not make it late enough for the meteor shower, but I did get a couple shots before crashing.

Long Distance Sunset

Today’s Photo: Long Distance Sunset

For the last several weeks, it seems that my timing has been off for everything.  Mostly, the time I get to go out and take photos and it almost never coincides with sunrise or sunset anymore.  I was able to get this one a couple of months ago.  I was out just before sunset and convinced my wife that I needed to stop.  I got a little quality time with the red orb in the sky.

Evening at the Barn

Today’s Photo: Evening at the Barn

I was headed home the other evening after it had rained nearly all day.  The clouds were still pretty thick but had some big breaks between and lots of sun.  They were moving quickly across the sky and the bright patches of sunlight flew across the fields.  I stopped and tried several times to capture the bright and dark patches and ended up making it to this barn.  I thought it looked good in the early evening light.

A Jasper Sunset

Today’s Photo: A Jasper Sunset

Well, it looks like the sunset season is going to be good.  At least that is for now.  We have had storms about once or twice a week and seem to be finishing just around sunset.  This one was not one of those days, but still had a few high flying clouds.

An Orange Sunset

Today’s Photo: An Orange Sunset

It’s that time of year again when anything is possible.  Sunrise and sunset can either be great, or terrible from a photography standpoint.  I shot this one on the way home from hiking a couple weeks ago.  I hope I get more of these than the plain blue skies this year.

Great Smoky Mountains

Today’s Photo: Great Smoky Mountains

Driving through Cades Cove, there is no shortage of stunning vistas.  This was one looking back into the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains.  The ridge line in the distance is where the Appalachian Trail traverses the park.

The Sunsphere

Today’s Photo: The Sunsphere

This is another shot I took in Knoxville.  This was my second walk around town and was completely taken by surprise when I ran across the waterfalls and fountains here.  I had seen the Sunsphere on my first walk and made it my goal on the second.  I spent a decent amount of time walking through the park this night.  I just wish I had taken some shots of the Knoxville Convention Center.  It was all lit up that night and I made the assumption that it would be that was another night.  It was not.

Northwest View, Blood Mountain</strong

Today’s Photo: Northwest View, Blood Mountain

Christmas Day, I made the hike up Blood Mountain to the summit.  We hiked from the parking lot near Neals Gap, up the Byron Reese Trail then along the Appalachian Trail.  I started bundled like little Mikey from “The Christmas Story”, but by the time we make it to the Appalachian Trail, I was in jeans and a t-shirt.  That did not last long when we reached the summit and then stopped by the trail shelter.  This shot was taken on top of the rock beside the shelter and the wind was blisteringly cold coming up the mountain.

Acworth Health Park

Today’s Photo: Acworth Health Park

I was driving through north Cobb County and ran across this beautiful building.  It is in a random spot with nothing else large around it.  I could not think of why there would be anything of this caliber in the area.  Then I remembered that I grew up near here several decades ago and surely there are more people living in this part of the county now.  By the time I made it to this shot, I could hardly feel my fingers.
