Now, I know I am the only one who has this problem, but wanted to express my utter frustration.  Tuesday this week I saw one of the most stunning sunsets I have seen in awhile.  In fact, it was so stunning that I had people calling me asking if I saw it, to which, I answered that I did see it.  And for the frustrating part, I was unable to photograph it.  No, I was not in a bad location for photography, but I was otherwise occupied.

Fast forward to today (Wednesday)…around two hours before sunset, the sky had those nice, I can’t wait to photography clouds in the sky.  Enter the plan for a spontaneous sunset trip.  Just because I knew it was going to be wonderful.  About an hour and a half passed and, of course, the heavier / lower clouds make their entrance.  Beautiful sunset nixed.  I still went to the location I wanted to go to, but the sunset I was wishing for never materialized.

I know no one else has this problem.  But, if I am mistaken and this has happened before, leave a comment with your experience.

Today’s Photo: Sunset Missed

I had a meeting late the other evening and decided to take another route home.  It has been a long time since I had driven that road on any regular basis.  Well, lets just say “years” since I was on it for any length of time.  This road passes by Carters Lake in the North Georgia area.  Carters Lake is the deepest lake in Georgia and the tallest earthen dam east of the Mississippi River.  At the bottom of the dam is another smaller recreation lake.  I was driving the road which has a small bridge when I saw the remnants of what had been a beautiful sunset.  The colors were still great, so I stopped and got a few shots before it went away.

Don’t miss this other photo of The Lake (not this one of course).  And while you are at it, this is last Thursday’s daily photo.

Update to Google+ mini review:

It appears that now, you can use a business name or other nickname.  I still am not impressed with the iPhone app.  It is okay for adding to circles, watching your stream, but not great for posting.  Maybe Google will fix this.  If you missed the review you can find it at the Google+ mini review.

Today’s Photo:  Cloudy Movement

I usually see all kinds of really cool stuff on the way home.  The daily photo today comes from one of those times.  Luckily, I had the camera that day.  Most of the time, the best stuff happens when I don’t.  I hope that I am not the only one to which his happens.  Do you have this problem to?  This is another of those drive home photos: Clouds over the Barn.

While you are looking at this, don’t miss last Saturday’s Daily Photo.

You can also click on the photo itself to open it in my Flickr photostream.  Most of these can be downloaded full size from Flickr.  The look good as desktop backgrounds to me.

Today’s Photo:  Sunset Beams

I love how on cloudy days, sometimes the sun pops through at just the right time.

Yes, another gate.  But at least it is a different one today.

The previous post, The Road Home, made it as a featured post on Photography Daily.  If you have not seen the articles posted over there, stop by.  They have lots of interesting stuff.  While you are checking out other interesting pages, stop by the Triple Exposure page for some good information on HDR and panoramics among other things.

Today’s Photo:  Panama City Beach Sunset

Today’s photo comes from Panama City Beach Florida.  Commonly known as the “Redneck Riviera” in the southeast.  Is it just in the southeast that it is called this, or has anyone heard of it from outside this area?  Now, I know you are wondering why I was there.  Why, of course it was for photographing beautiful sunsets on the beach.  Why would it not be?

This photo was taken at Pineapple Willy’s right on the beach in Panama City Beach.  I don’t remember all the specifics about it, but it was taken from the deck facing west (that was put in there because you know someone was going to ask what direction).  If you are ever in the area, they have great food and a good place to eat with the ocean breeze.

Do you like HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography? I have made a point over the last few months to take all my photos as if I was going to make an HDR out of it. Now, that is with the exception of photos which I know will not make good HDR’s. Then again, some of my single exposures have made astonishing HDR’s. This means that for every photo I take, there are really three images (-2 to +2). Is this normal or am I alone in this thinking? I guess it helps to have a 32GB SD card too.

Today’s Photo: Thanksgiving Sunset

I love how the seasons change the time the sun rises and sets. I currently use LightTrac on the iPhone to get a graphical view of the sunrise and sunset. It is great for getting the right angle at the right time of the year. I have used this to scout locations before going to them for the first time. I also like to find if the sun will be where I want it also.

This photo was taken at Thanksgiving this last year. I am dying in the heat here and can’t wait until it gets cold. I really wish my wife would let us move to Alaska. I could be happy there. Too bad she is allergic to the cold.

Don’t say it…I know…Another Gate.

Thanksgiving Sunset

I don’t know about you, but I take my camera everywhere.  Well maybe not to the bathroom.  However, I have it with me all the time.  I have had too many times when I said “I just wish I had my camera because that would make a great photo”.  So I have made it a point to eliminate that statement.  But, that has led to another problem altogether…Composition.  I routinely see fabulous sunsets (not sunrises because I can’t seem to get my wife up early so any sunrise is an event dedicated to just my photography) but most of the time, I find that I am not in a very conducive setting for a photo.  I usually am in a parking lot, along side the road, leaving a restaurant or traveling somewhere.  I seem to have trouble getting a good setting and then I get in the car and drive around like a mad man looking for the perfect setting while the sun is going down.  Today’s photo is one of those experiences.  How do you handle this?

Today’s Photo:  White Top

I went to eat with my family the other day.  When we left the restaurant, I noticed a beautiful sunset in the works.  Of course, I grabbed my camera and began the sunburst pattern (walking toward an object then away and repeat until the right angle is located.  Usually taking photos all during the process).  However, I found myself in the parking lot of a strip mall with tons of lamp posts and cars in the way.  I finally settled on what I thought would be a good shot.  I just loved the top edge of the thunderhead being a brilliant white where the sun hit it and then seeing the shadow lines cast through the air.  Click on the photo to see it in Flickr and then select the large size to see the detail at the top of the cloud.  I just loved it.

I was fortunate to have some time around sunset one evening while in Portland.  I walked all the way around the Esplanade.  The what you ask?  Yeah, Esplanade.  I had to look it up also.  There are so many excellent angles to capture in this city.  I really like the bridges.  In the southeast, bridges over the water are either tall enough to allow ships through, or are draw bridges that split in the middle and raise on either side.  In Portland, they have a section in the middle that lifts straight up.  I wish I had been able to capture one while it was up, but I was never in the right place at the right time.

Have you ever messed up something that other wise would have gone perfectly according to plan?  Plan, plan again, and then over plan, because those all of those plans will fall apart at first contact.

I decided the other evening to capture some sunset photos.  In my mind, I worked out my plan, including the location and even my sunset shot.  Wonderful you say?  I thought so too…and then, first contact.  I arrived at the location and to my utter astonishment, things just did not line up.

Enter back-up plan number 1.  Why number one?  Because typically two, three or more come after it.

I went to my alternate location and waited… and waited… got a drink and waited some more.  Just before the sunset, I second guessed myself and chose alternate location number 3.  Into the wind the car went and off to location number 3.  I arrived at number 3 to find a vehicle blocking access and a beautiful sunset in the works.  But plan number 4 formed at a rapid pace now and once again the car went into overdrive.  I arrived in time for one shot of the sun sinking below the horizon (photo coming soon) and shortly later this…

I promised my daughter that I would take her for ice cream the other day.  While partaking of that creamy indulgence, I looked out the window and saw this gorgeous sunset in the making.  However, as in all things, I had to search for the best angle.  Just before it all went away I was able to get a few shots of the sunset over McCoullum Airfield in Georgia.

I just love the way the sky looks at sunset.  You get some of the most amazing colors you can find all at the same time.  I have discovered a whole new world of sunsets with HDR.
