The Magic School Bus

Today’s Photo:  The Magic School Bus

My kids have spent the last several years watching a television show called The Magic School Bus.  There was nothing magical about this rusted old school bus near the back of Old Car City.  That is unless you used a little imagination and a lot of creativity.  When I saw this, I decided that I wanted to bring it back to life.  Maybe like a cat with nine lives.  Surely around number eight or nine, it has to be looking kinda ragged.  I wanted to capture that, but also that maybe there is still some life left in it.

At one point in my childhood, I wanted to be a marine biologist when I grew up.  I was fascinated by the ocean and the creatures living in it and wanted nothing better than to spend countless hours swimming with them.  I did not grow up to be a marine biologist, but I still love the ocean.  I decided to share some of that and took my children on a dolphin cruise.  On our way out of the bay, I noticed these two pelicans sitting on one of the navigation signs.

A Point of National Pride

Setting yourself goals and then striving to reach them can be a matter of personal pride.  However, when the goal is much greater than one person, it has the potential of becoming a national goal.  That is what happened during the space race… land a person on the moon.  In 1969, after many failures and successes, the United States accomplished this goal.  It was only through the hard work and ingenuity of those people who would dream that it happened.  However, it was not without extreme danger which is evident on the Apollo 16 capsule that sits in the US Space and Rocket Center in Alabama.

I was taking photos of the Christmas lights in Calhoun when I saw this wreath on the gate to the park.  I noticed it because my sister was taking photos in the same area, probably of the same thing.  It looked good against the Christmas tree and there was just enough light from the lamps behind me to balance the scene.

Multiple Personalities

On the north edge of Atlanta is the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.  It encompasses about 50 miles worth of the river and some of the surrounding area part of that area is called Sope Creek.  There are old ruins of a paper mill right along the creek with many door and window frames still intact.  I decided to have  little fun.

Orchestral Orbs

One section of the Garden Lights at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens were the Orchestral Orbs.  They were globes set up all around the Great Lawn and choreographed to Christmas music to change colors.  I tried several times to get some good shots of all the orbs, but the exposure was too long to get the background lit also.  When you mix color changing objects in a photo, you get the sum of their colors…white.  I shortened the exposure time significantly to get this one and retain the colors.

Game Face

One of my favorite genres of photography is Street Photography.  To me, there is nothing better than catching a candid shot of person engaged in whatever it is that they are doing.  For me, it is also one of the most challenging.  I am not a “people” person and prefer to spend time alone and away from crowds.  I do try to push the edge of uncomfortable for me and sometimes I walk away with something that I am proud of.

I took this shot at Dixie Speedway last summer.  I spent an evening in the pits with my brother and two nephews, one happens to race.  I was walking around getting some shots of the cars and made it back by just in time to see my nephew getting ready to race…

The Washington Monument

In 1848, construction began on a monument to the United States of Americas first president, George Washington.  Construction was stopped during the civil war and when it started back, a different color of stone was used.  In 2011 an earthquake in Virginia cause the monument to be closed until a future date.  This shot was in April 2011 and the earthquake was August.  I need to go back and see if it changed enough to notice.
